Island Recyling has been cited for numerous
violations over the past few years!
On May 1, 2004, the City and County of Honolulu's Fire
Department responded to a fire at the Island Recycling facility on Sand
Island, Honolulu, Hawaii. The fire comes as no surprise and could
have been prevented.
We have been investigating Island Recycling for several
months. In
December we
reported information we uncovered regarding numerous violations at Island
Recycling that were cited by government agencies over the
past three years. On numerous occasions we discussed the
situation with the Legislature, the Governor, and other government offices to no avail.
HERE IS a letter we wrote to Mr. Eric
Crispin, Director, Department of Planning and Permitting on
December 23, 2003, regarding violations at Island Recycling.
And, HERE IS a letter we
wrote to Mr. Chiyome L. Fukino M.D.,
Director, State of Hawaii Department of Health on December 23, 2003.
On April 14,
2004, we wrote a letter to the Department of Budget and Fiscal Services
protesting the inclusion of Island Recycling in the bidding process for
island-wide trash recycling on Oahu.
Hopefully, now
something will be done about this!
